Introduction

Picea pungens 'Blaukissen' The British Conifer Society has been established since February 2003. The enthusiastic efforts of our founding committee and the initial support from the directors of Bedgebury National Pinetum gave us the opportunity to create a long overdue society. Committee members reflect a wide variety of interest in conifers, including nurserymen, collectors, and employees of national arboreta. They have links with other national horticultural groups and organisations, as well as with the American and the Dutch Conifer Societies. We wish to attract a broad spectrum of conifer enthusiasts and we hope the society will encourage the coming together of like-minded individuals, the sharing of knowledge and information, and the promotion, conservation and propagation of conifers. One of the society's main goals is to promote the wider use of unusual dwarf and ornamental varieties in gardens. Our members are encouraged to contribute to the society’s events, publications and activities, and we ask for your support and assistance.

Our aims include:

  • Bi-annual Journal
  • Regular meetings and open days
  • Tour and visits home and abroad to conifer collections
  • Assisting identification and encouraging correct naming of conifers
  • Cuttings and scion exchange
  • Exhibits at shows
  • Garden open days
  • Other publications
  • Establishing links with other societies

The photo gallery has now been extended with many new photographs. Our main goal is to make this site one of the most comprehensive collections of photographic images of conifers on the Internet. The albums now include pictures from around the world, from national parks to private gardens, and we would like to take this opportunity to thank those who have contributed pictures or allowed us to photograph their private collections - especially Daniel Luscombe (UK), Wiel Linssen, Ronald Vermeulen (Holland), Jorg Kohout, Uwe Horstmann (Germany); and Dennis Dodge (USA).

For those not so familiar with the photo gallery, click on an album name e.g. Conifer gardens; then click on an image once to view it in half-screen size, then click again to view it in full-screen (this may take a few minutes if you do not have broadband!).

BCS Journal Role of the RHS International Conifer Registrar
By Sabina G. Knees

The Royal Horticultural Society is the registration authority for nine groups of plants including all conifers and their cultivars, a role it has held since 1962. To date, a comprehensive Register has been published in four alphabetic parts covering names in genera from Abies to Pherosphaera, complemented by occasional supplements in journals such as the International Dendrology Society’s Yearbook and the American Conifer Society’s journal, Conifer Quarterly. The Register lists all botanical and horticultural names applied to conifers, giving brief details of origin and characteristics for cultivars.

Pinus x holfordiana A Pine with a good Pedigree
By Penny Jones

There are a small number of plants that bear the Holford name in recognition of Captain Robert Stayner Holford (1808-1892) and his son and heir Sir George Lindsey Holford (1860-1926) who together planted and developed Westonbirt Arboretum, but probably the most well known is the Holford Pine, Pinus x holfordiana.
